The
day starts at 8:30 at the show, when the show opens to the general public. I
stay at the booth for a bit with dad, then I meet up with John and Vicki Farnam to walk the show. John gets recognized frequently and stops to talk to many admirers; I think we moved about 20 feet every hour. Stop at the Crimson Trace
booth, Vicki is checking out possible laser grips for her Kahr .380 pistol.
Fun
trip to Lasermax, learned about some new products, and saw an attendee exclaim: "Oooh,
cool laser" as he picked up the laser equipped M&P, wrapped his
finger around the trigger, and pointed the muzzle at his own face. Our little party walked quickly away leaving the Lasermax staff to attend the gentleman.
John makes slow progress through the aisles; stopping often to talk. We collectively note the popularity of laser sights despite the general difficulty of manipulating the small button controls. Tactical usefulness of any accessory in a time of dire need always demands vigilant practice in a variety of conditions. Training opportunities abound as these laser sights are selling by the thousands.
Saw a group of 4 Sands Expo employees pulling several of those
damn catering carts then suddenly stop in the middle of an aisle utterly blocking all progress. A frustrated attendee struggling through the already glutted aisles, lost it, kicked the carts aside, and walked away, it made my
day.
Another fun fact: a single bottle of water costs 3 dollars, and they still charge tax! Gotta love trade shows!
Got to visit with Nighthawk
Custom people where Vicki liked the Lady Hawk despite the hefty price tag. Got to meet
some crazy people today, Jeff Hall, he incorporates martial arts and firearms
training, while wearing a gui (check spelling, idk how the hell you spell it,
but those stupid robes for karate, how the heck do you carry a gun in one of
those?) Told him where to go, but get this: He writes for Harris publications,
he didn't know where their booth was, and then he thought that FMG Publications
was called FWR, then proceeded to argue with me, even though I was right and he
asked me where to go and what it was called.
Got
to meet Matt Graham, not the pompous "I-am-tacticaler-than-thou" that
he comes off as in his articles. Cool guy actually and he made fun of this Jeff
guy quite a bit so it was entertaining. It is really interesting spending the
day with John, because he picks up little phrases here and there, and then
repeats them off, to great laughter.
Got
to meet Dennis Tueller saw me and said ".....you are related to Steve Camp
aren't you?" I guess I look like him? Interesting time spent at Glock,
maybe I will meet the gunny tomorrow if I am lucky (*insert eye roll here*)
Interesting the people that the Farnams associate with.
Magpul,
has soft porn calendars that they are receiving donations for and if you wait
in line, after buying...err umm I mean donating, you can get them signed by the
"models" I have not inquired as to the price of the
"donation" and the lines are pretty insane.
So
many whacky people, and for some reason, it seems like Haiti is going on under
us, as at random intervals, for almost the entire day, the ground will just
shake. I find it better not to ask questions.
There
is a man who I swear is related to the Shamwow/ Hooker punching fellow, he has
a microphone with a camera on it for cops, but he does stupid showboating
stuff. It is highly interesting to see the crowds that gather around him. Dad
is in a very good location, and seems to be getting good levels of interest,
maybe this will be the show. Midway had a representative search him down and
inquire about getting Safe Direction in their catalog, they are huge!
Tons
of shemaghs, I almost bought Dad one so he could be just like Ken.
Awwwwwwwww.......
It
was very interesting leading John and Vicki around, get to meet a ton of other
people and see how other stuff goes on. Later, went out to dinner with some
asshole, who is a doctor or something, really annoying voice and dad said you
knew him, he has like a billion different letters after his name, and wouldn't
shut up!
I
am the local tech guy, for everything from iPhones to computers to lasers to
maps? I showed Vicki how to use the notepad on the iPhone, and she was floored!
She fell in love, and is now making notes for all of this stuff just to play
with it. I affect people soooooo much it is shocking. I started drinking Dr.
Pepper and won't compete with John in "iced tea-a-palooza" he just
slams this stuff down because he doesn't drink during the show at all (*insert
eye roll here*)
That
is most of my day, I probably left some stuff out, but it is probably because I
am trying to repress the memories.
Oh,
and we had to walk home in the rain, so I took a shower, then put on shorts.
Dad then remarked "aren't you going to put on pants since it is chilly
out?" to which I replied, "I don't want the bottoms of my pants to
get wet, and if the bottoms of my shorts get wet, something is wrong."
