The #1 Rule of Firearm Safety: Always keep your muzzle pointed at a SAFE DIRECTION

  • Always keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to fire.
  • Be sure of your target and backstop.
  • Always wear ANSI approved safety glasses with side shields to protect the eyes.
  • Always wear shooting-rated hearing protection.
  • Always wear a baseball-type hat with the brim pulled down snugly against the top of the safety glasses to protect the forehead and top of the head from lead and jacket particles.
  • Garments that cover all exposed skin are recommended.
  • After hitting a steel target, bullet particles may create a "splash cone" of lead and jacket particles that can travel more than 20 yds. for handgun ammunition and 75 yds. for rifle ammunition. This splash zone can be a 25-degree cone in all directions from the surface of the target.
  • Use of frangible ammunition is highly recommended when shooting at any steel target. When using non-frangible ammunition, use only quality service/duty handgun ammunition with a maximum muzzle velocity of 1,500 FPS. Rifle ammunition muzzle velocity should not exceed 3,200 FPS. Never use armor-piercing (AP), steel or hardened ammunition when shooting steel targets.
  • Lead shotgun birdshot and buckshot can be used with steel targets. However, never shoot a shotgun slug at a steel target, because serious personal injury up to and including death may result.
  • Recommended minimum distance from the shooter to the ROTATOR is 8 yds. Recommended minimum distance to the steel Rifle Plate is 75 yds. Spectators should stand at least 10 yds. directly behind the shooter.
  • Use only on a properly-constructed firing range with an adequate backstop height (25 ft.) and an adequate downrange safety area (500 yds.). Position the steel target as close as possible to the backstop to reduce downrange ricochet effect and distance.
  • Discontinue the close-range use (under 75 yds.) of any steel target that has surface defects caused by wear or use of improper ammunition. The target impact area should be smooth and flat to safely use steel targets.
